Queer Voices - Without Words
My Master Thesis project explored the intersection of language and its systemic impact on the lived experiences of queer individuals. Through a multimedia installation, I sought to weave together multiple layers of experience, drawing on extensive research, including the perspectives of Judith Butler and Sara Ahmed on queerness and language. Wax served as the primary material, embodying themes of fluidity, transformation, and resistance.
Language shapes how we understand the world and ourselves, yet it also reflects and reinforces inequality. In a society where heterosexuality and the gender binary remain dominant norms, deviation often invites discrimination. While finding the right words can be liberating, it is also fraught with ambivalence. Queer identities continue to be burdened by stigma and therefore many terms used to describe them carry negative connotations. This installation centers queer voices, exploring how language shapes their self-perception and lived experiences.
